Mubarra Instrumed luxating elevator set

Blade width and the shape of the working end decide where a luxating elevator works best. Here is how to choose.

A luxating elevator only works well when its blade fits the space it has to enter. Too wide, and it will not slip into the periodontal ligament space without force. Too narrow, and it takes many more passes around a large root. The bend of the working end matters just as much: it decides whether you can follow the root at the right angle, or end up working against the cheek, the tongue or the neighbouring tooth.

If you are still deciding between a luxating elevator and a root elevator, start with our article on the difference between them. This guide, from the Mubarra Instrumed workshop in Sialkot, assumes you have chosen a luxating elevator and now need the right width and pattern.

Blade width: match it to the root

Luxating elevators are named by the width of the blade at the tip. A simple rule: choose the widest blade that still enters the ligament space easily.

  • 1.5 mm and 2 mm: incisors, narrow roots, root tips and tight spaces between crowded teeth.
  • 3 mm: the everyday size for premolars, canines and other single-rooted teeth. If you buy only one luxating elevator, this is usually the one.
  • 4 mm and 5 mm: molars and wide roots, where a broader blade covers more of the root surface with each movement.
  • Double-ended (3/1.5 mm and 5/3 mm): two widths on one instrument, so you can move from a narrow blade to a wider one without picking up another instrument.

Start narrow and step up. The narrow blade opens the space, and the wider blade follows the same path with less effort. That is the idea behind the double-ended Mubarra Instrumed patterns: one end opens, the other end follows.

Bend: match it to the surface you are working on

The bend decides which side of the root the blade can follow without forcing your wrist or stretching the cheek.

  • Straight: the blade runs in line with the handle. It works best between teeth, on root tips, and on front teeth and premolars that you can reach in a straight line.
  • Upper bend: a gentle curve that makes it a good all-round first instrument, especially when you work from the cheek side of the tooth.
  • Reverse bend: the blade curves back towards the handle. It helps on the far (distal) side and the tongue or palate side of back teeth, where a straight blade cannot line up with the root.
  • Contra bend: the working end is offset forward, for the tongue side and the far side of molars, the hardest surfaces to reach.

A simple rule: straight between teeth, upper bend from the cheek side, reverse and contra bends for the back of the mouth. The 3 mm Mubarra Instrumed blade comes in all four patterns, which makes it easy to compare them side by side.

Building a set

Most clinics do not need every pattern on day one. A practical starting kit:

  • 2 mm straight for narrow roots, root tips and work between teeth
  • 3 mm upper bend as the everyday all-round instrument
  • 5 mm straight for molars and wide roots
  • 3 mm contra bend for the tongue side and far side of molars

A complete set of 8 or 10 instruments covers all widths and bends. Keeping the set in a sterilisation cassette gives every blade its own place, so the edges do not knock against each other.

Look after the edge

The thin, sharp edge is what makes a luxating elevator work. Every Mubarra Instrumed luxating elevator is finished by hand, but even a well-finished edge will not survive being used as a lever. Use it with gentle pressure along the root and small side-to-side movements. Check the tip before every use, and have a bent or chipped blade repaired or replaced rather than forcing it.

Our luxating elevators

We make luxating elevators by hand in our Sialkot workshop from surgical stainless steel: widths from 1.5 mm to 5 mm, straight and angled patterns, double-ended instruments and complete sets. They are available as single pieces, in bulk for clinics and distributors, or under your own brand.

See the 3 mm luxating elevator, the 3 mm reverse bend and the 10-piece set in our shop, or ask us on WhatsApp for sizes and bulk prices.
